The Beta was the first Lancia to be Manufactured under Fiat ownership. The choice of name reflected the fact that the company originally used letters of the Greek alphabet for their early vehicles.
Produced in three series over a 12-year production life, the Beta Saloon or Berlina was available with 1300, 1400, 1600, and 2000 cc engine variants.
Lancia was given a huge amount of freedom in the development of the Beta. The Beta Berlina body shape was designed by Fiat's styling centre. It had a unique chassis, suspension, interior and bodywork. The engine as fitted in the Beta had little common with the engine fitted in a contemporary Fiat 132. Lancia modified the cylinder head with hemispherical combustion chambers, different inlet and exhaust manifolds, different valve timing and different carburation. The resulting power output and torque figures were higher for Lancias than for Fiats. The Lancia version of the twin-cam engine was designed to drive the front wheels via a 5-speed gearbox; whereas the Fiat version of the engine, as fitted in a Fiat 132, drove the rear wheels through a 4-speed box.
At the time of its introduction, the Beta featured many of the latest automotive technological developments for a mass-produced motor car of its day, including; rack and pinion steering, 5-speed gearbox, twin cam engine, and Dual circuit disc brakes all round.
This lovely example was originally registered by the supplying garage on 13th April 1977, it was then swiftly bought by Mr William P Rodwell the next day. Presented in resplendent Bangkok Yellow with Tan Cloth upholstery. Mr Rodwell used the Lancia sparingly, covering a mere 26,000 miles in 8 years. Mr Rodwell then advertised the Beta in a newspaper (The clipping can be found in the history file) where it was purchased by Mr Keith Elsden for the grand sum of £725 in 1985. Again, Mr Elsden used the car sparingly, keeping it in a dry garage and covering the car in grease. We believe this is why the car is in such remarkable condition today. Mr Elsden kept a detailed log of what work had been done on the car and what he thought could be improved. Mr. Elsden then sold the Lancia to our current vendor in 2011, covering a mere 9,000 in his stewardship.
The vendor has cherished this car for the past 12 years, with simply no expense spared. Including a carb rebuild by Lancia Zagato in 2012, a Gearbox rebuild, and new clutch in 2016 to the sum of £1140, and a full bodywork restoration in 2018 to the sum of £10,000. Since then, the Lancia has been looked after by Angelo at Tackwood Services Ltd, who is a renowned Guru on Italian cars. The vendor has shown this Beta 1600 at the Festival of the Unexceptional, Concours De L’Ordinaire, displayed on Lancia Beta stand 4 times at the NEC classic car show, Auto Italia feature car, Silverstone Classic, and is even the Lancia Beta image on Wikipedia. 5,000 miles in 12 years, with the biggest trip driving 800 miles to Spa Italia and back. As you can tell, this charming Lancia has been well-cherished throughout its lifespan and has always been garaged.
The staff here at Manor Park Classics have fallen in love with this car, its quirky colour catches the eye of all that walk in, the condition of the original interior simply belies its age and the bodywork is in remarkable condition throughout. The 1600 engine ticks over sweetly, on the road and feels spritely and spirited with an exhaust note that never fails to make you smile. This truly is a special car, believed to be only one of 23 and this is surely one of or the best out there.
